Things Clients Say on the Table (And Why You Never Have to Apologize)

If you've ever been on a massage table and suddenly felt the urge to apologize for something, you are not alone. In fact, you are in excellent company. After years of working with clients, we've heard just about everything. And we mean everything.

So in the interest of public service, here is an official list of things clients say (or do) on the table, along with our completely honest response to each one.

"I didn't shave."

We genuinely do not notice. And if we did, we would not care even a little bit. Your leg hair is not on our list of concerns. The only thing we are thinking about is whether that IT band is going to cooperate today.

"I'm on my period."

Completely fine. Massage is actually wonderful during your period. It can help reduce cramps, lower back ache, and the general feeling that your body has declared war on you. There is nothing awkward about it from our end, so please don't let it stop you from booking.

"I think I fell asleep."

This is genuinely one of the best things that can happen during a session. It means your nervous system fully let go. It means we're doing our job well. If you also snored a little, that's fine too. We take it as a compliment.

"I'm pretty sure I drooled."

Yes. It happens. The face cradle, the deep relaxation, the fact that your jaw finally unclenched for the first time in three months. It's a natural consequence of a body that has truly let go. We have seen it many times. We are not discussing it at the front desk.

"I think I... well. Um. You know."

You mean the involuntary stomach gurgle? The gas that escaped when we worked on your hip flexors? Yes, we have heard it. The body makes sounds. Digestion continues during massage. These are signs that your parasympathetic nervous system is activated, which is exactly what we want. We do not flinch. We do not comment. We keep working.

"I have a bruise / scar / rash / weird thing on my back."

Thank you for telling us. That is genuinely useful information. We will work around it, adjust our pressure, or ask a clarifying question if we need to. We are not squeamish, and your body doesn't need to look a certain way to deserve good care.

"Sorry, I haven't had water today."

We will remind you to drink water after your session and mean it kindly, not as a lecture. Hydration genuinely helps with how your tissue responds. But we're not keeping score. Just drink a big glass when you get home.

"I feel like I should have cleaned up or something."

You came in from your day. Maybe you worked out first, or came straight from work, or ran errands and forgot to plan ahead. That's real life. You do not need to arrive pre-groomed, pre-showered, or pre-apologized. You just need to show up.

The Bottom Line

Massage therapists are not judging your body. We have chosen a career that involves working closely with human bodies in all their honest, real, unfiltered reality. The stubbly legs, the tired muscles, the stomach sounds, the occasional snore: none of it is surprising, and none of it changes how we care for you.

The only thing we want you to focus on is communicating how you feel during the session. Too much pressure? Say so. Too cold in the room? We'll fix it. Somewhere that needs more attention? Tell us. That's the stuff that actually matters.

Come as you are. We've got the rest covered.
